IPS Glow Test
Glow and bleed look almost identical in a photograph, and the difference decides whether an exchange is worth your time. There is one reliable way to tell them apart without instruments: move your head.

The angle check
The screen goes black and walks you through four viewing positions. At each one you answer a single question: did the bright areas move with you? Glow tracks your head. Bleed does not.
Takes about a minute. You will need room to move roughly 30 cm to each side of your normal position.
Before you start
- 1.Turn the room lights off and let your eyes adjust.
- 2.Use your normal brightness. Maximum brightness exaggerates both effects.
- 3.OLED panels have no backlight, so neither effect applies — any glow on an OLED is something else.

Why photographs are useless here
Almost every "look how bad my IPS glow is" photo online is misleading, and usually not on purpose. A camera on a long exposure in a dark room collects far more light than your eye does, so it turns a glow you would never notice into a dramatic golden haze. A camera also sits at one fixed angle, which removes the single piece of information that distinguishes glow from bleed.
If you do need to photograph it — for a return or a warranty claim — shoot at a normal exposure from your actual seating position, and say in the claim that you did. An obviously over-exposed photo tends to weaken a case rather than strengthen it, because support staff have seen thousands of them.
How much glow is normal
Some is unavoidable on any IPS-type panel. It is most visible on dark content in a dark room, most obvious in the corner furthest from your eye, and it grows as you sit closer or more off-centre. On a large monitor viewed from close up you are looking at the far corners at a steep angle, which is why 27-inch and larger panels seem to have more of it — the panel is not worse, the geometry is.
Backlight bleed is the one worth acting on, because it varies between individual units. If this check says the bright areas are fixed, step through the backlight bleed ladder to see how far up the gray scale it stays visible, and document it with a screen test report before contacting the retailer.
Not sure it is either?
If the bright areas are not at the edges at all, or they look like irregular patches across the middle of the screen, you are probably looking at clouding or a uniformity problem instead.
