How to look
- 1. Let the screen warm up for a few minutes first.
- 2. View straight-on from your normal distance — angles create false unevenness.
- 3. 50% gray is the most revealing slide; linger on it.
- 4. Slowly pan your eyes across the panel rather than staring at one spot.

Seeing dirty-looking patches?
Irregular smudges that stay put when you clean the screen are the dirty screen effect. It shows best on 50% gray — run that level alone and pan your eyes slowly across the panel.
What you might see
Dirty screen effect (DSE) looks like faint smudges or blotches, as if the screen needed cleaning — except wiping changes nothing. It is most visible on mid-gray and during panning shots in sports. Vertical banding shows as regular light/dark stripes; OLED panels tend to show it in the dark grays (check the 5% and 10% slides), LCDs more often in the mid tones. Clouding — irregular brighter areas on dark grays — points to backlight issues on LCD; confirm with the backlight bleed test.
How much unevenness is normal?
Perfect uniformity does not exist in consumer panels. Nearly every screen shows some deviation on a full-field gray if you look for it, and panels of the same model vary unit to unit. The practical question is whether you notice it in real content: hockey rinks, overcast skies, spreadsheets, webpage backgrounds. If banding or DSE follows you into everyday use on a new device, that is a fair reason to exchange it — document it with a screen test report first.
Seeing a persistent shape rather than random unevenness — a logo outline, a taskbar shadow? That is retention or burn-in territory: run the OLED burn-in test.
On an OLED panel, most uniformity problems live in the darkest grays rather than at 50%. The OLED gray test steps through 1–25% one level at a time and lets you record which region of the screen looks darker, brighter, tinted or banded.
