Where to look
- • Places static UI lives: channel logos, news tickers, taskbars, docks, game HUDs, status bars.
- • The 5–20% gray slides show retention most clearly — go slowly there.
- • Red, green and blue slides reveal uneven wear of one subpixel color.
Burn-in vs image retention
They look identical at first: a ghost of previous content sitting on top of the current image. The difference is persistence. Image retention is temporary — after the screen shows varied content for a while (or the TV runs its pixel-refresh cycle) the ghost fades. Burn-in is permanent, uneven wear of the organic emitters: pixels that spent thousands of hours displaying a bright static logo age faster and now render dimmer than their neighbors.
So if this test reveals a shape: note it, use the display normally for a day (or trigger the panel maintenance cycle from the TV's settings), and re-run the test. Gone means retention. Still there means burn-in.
If it is burn-in
There is no way to un-age pixels, and "burn-in fixer" videos that flash colors can't restore worn emitters — at best they even out wear slightly, at worst they add hours of stress. Practical steps: check your warranty (a few manufacturers cover burn-in within a limited period; many exclude it), then reduce further wear — enable logo dimming and screen shift features, lower brightness for static content, and hide always-on UI where you can. Document the current state with a screen test report so you have a dated baseline if it worsens.
